Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions. Should you have a question not included in these FAQs, please let us know by sending meals@iu.edu a quick email and we will add it to the list.
Meal Plan Basics
A meal plan is a convenient, prepaid way for students to enjoy meals on campus without the hassle of carrying cash or cards. Linked directly to a student’s CrimsonCard, the meal plan is activated with a quick swipe at any IU Indianapolis Dining Services location.
Meal plans are billed through the student’s Bursar account—just like tuition and fees—so there’s no payment required at the time of service. Students can choose what they want to eat, when they want it.
In addition to simplifying campus dining, meal plans offer significant cost savings compared to paying for individual meals out of pocket. They also help us maintain high food quality while keeping prices as low as possible.
Our meal plans include three components: Meal Swipes, Swipe Swaps, and Dining Dollars, each designed for flexibility and value. Learn more about each in the sections below.
Meal Swipes grant access to all-you-care-to-eat dining at Tower Dining—the heart of campus dining. Enjoy everything from made-to-order stir fry and a fully stocked salad bar to daily chef specials, fresh fruit, decadent desserts, and classic favorites like pizza—perfect fuel for studying.
Each Meal Swipe equals one entry to Tower Dining. It can also be used for a Swipe Swap—a convenient way to use a swipe at select retail dining locations. (Learn more about Swipe Swaps in the next section.)
The number of Meal Swipes included in a plan depends on the option you choose. Click here to explore meal plan options.
To use a swipe, simply present your CrimsonCard to the cashier when entering Tower Dining. One swipe will be deducted from your account, and your receipt will show your remaining balance. For details on tracking usage or how swipes and Dining Dollars carry over, see our Meal Plan Balance and Usage information.
Swipe Swaps are a flexible way to use your Meal Swipes for carryout meals at select campus dining locations. Unlike traditional Meal Swipes used for dine-in at Tower Dining, Swipe Swaps let you grab a meal to go from Tower Dining or Tower Den by Denny’s.
Each Swipe Swap is equivalent to one Meal Swipe, and meal plan holders can use up to two Swipe Swaps per day.
Perfect for busy days or meals on the run, Swipe Swaps give you more ways to make your meal plan work with your schedule.
Dining Dollars are prepaid funds loaded onto a student’s CrimsonCard as part of their IU Indianapolis Meal Plan. They work just like a debit card and can be used at any IU Indianapolis Dining Services location on campus.
The big advantage? Savings.
While 1 Dining Dollar equals 1 U.S. dollar, students automatically receive a discount on every purchase made with Dining Dollars. This includes:
Sales tax exemption (available to all students), and
An additional 5% discount exclusively for IU Indianapolis Meal Plan holders.
To use Dining Dollars, students simply present their CrimsonCard at checkout. The amount is deducted from their balance, and the receipt will show how much remains.
For details on how Dining Dollars and Meal Swipes carry over between terms, see our Meal Plan Balance and Usage Information.
Bonus Swipes are extra Meal Swipes included with select meal plans. They can be used in two ways:
To treat a guest to a meal at Tower Dining, or
As an additional swipe for the meal plan holder if they run out of their regular allotment.
Bonus Swipes add flexibility to your plan and are perfect for visiting friends or those times you need an extra meal.
The following meal plans each include 5 free Bonus Swipes:
All Access 7-Day
All Access 5-Day
14 Per Week

Choosing a meal plan depends on two key things:
Where you live
How often you plan to eat on campus
Required Meal Plans (For Residents of Ball Hall, North Hall, or University Tower)
If you live in one of these halls, you’ll be automatically enrolled in a Required Meal Plan. These plans center around Tower Dining with all-you-care-to-eat access and a smaller amount of Dining Dollars for snacks or coffee at campus retail spots.
You’ll be enrolled in the All-Access 7-Day Plan by default, but you may switch to one of the options below if you’re eligible:
All-Access 7-Day Plan
Unlimited meals at Tower Dining, 7 days a week$50 Dining Dollars
Eligibility: All students
All-Access 5-Day Plan
Unlimited meals Monday–Friday at Tower Dining$200 Dining Dollars
Ideal for students who go home or work on weekends
14-Per-Week Plan
14 meals per week at Tower Dining$150 Dining Dollars
Eligibility: Sophomore standing or higher
Elective Meal Plans (For Off-Campus or Riverwalk Residents)
If you don’t live in a required meal plan residents hall, you can choose an Elective Meal Plan based on how often you’ll dine on campus. These plans include Dining Dollars for retail dining (like Campus Center food spots) and a few Meal Swipes for Tower Dining.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
Plan Name | Ideal for... | Includes |
---|---|---|
Block 10 | 1–2 meals/week | 10 Tower Dining meals + Dining Dollars |
Block 15 | 3–4 meals/week | 15 Tower Dining meals + Dining Dollars |
Block 20 | 5–6 meals/week | 20 Tower Dining meals + Dining Dollars |
Apartment Plan | 7–9 meals/week | 25 Tower Dining meals + more Dining Dollars |

Block Plans & Apartment Plans
Unused meal swipes carry over from fall to spring semester.
Any remaining swipes at the end of the spring semester are forfeited.
No swipes roll over to future semesters beyond spring.
Tip: Use all your swipes each academic year to get the full value of your plan.
All-Access & 14 Per Week Plans
Unused meal swipes do NOT carry over:
Not from week to week
Not from fall to spring semester
Not to any future semester
Be sure to use your weekly swipes—they reset each week and do not accumulate.
Unused Dining Dollars on all plans roll or carry over from fall to spring semester. Any unused Dining Dollars at the end of spring semester are forfeited. There is no carryover from spring to any future semester. Be sure to use all of your Dining Dollars to get the most value from your meal plan.
Allergies, Dietary and Special Accommodations
Students in need of food accommodations must register with the appropriate offices:
IU Indianapolis students should register with Accessible Educational Services (AES).
Purdue students should register with the Disability Resource Center (DRC).
These offices will review your request and determine eligibility for formal accommodations. Once approved, AES/DRC will work with the IU Indianapolis Dining Services Executive Chef to help implement the accommodations.
Please note: Registering with AES or DRC is separate from completing the online form about food allergies and dietary restrictions submitted before Orientation. Even if you completed that form, you must still register with AES (click here) or DRC (click here) to receive official accommodations.
Accessible Educational Services (AES) or the Disability Resource Center (DRC), in collaboration with the IU Indianapolis Dining Services Executive Chef, will help determine whether reasonable accommodations can be made.
Typically, the executive chef is able to accommodate most allergies and dietary restrictions; however, there are limitations within a high-volume dining environment. In such cases, students should consider whether living in a residential facility with a required meal plan is the best option.
It may be more suitable to live in an apartment-style residence hall, where students have greater control over the food they prepare and eat.
If you have special dietary needs create an Allergen ID at Dine on Campus at IUIndy. This will create a digital ID card that can be printed or uploaded to your smartphone wallet. Take a short survey that will help inform our chefs and managers of your dietary concerns. Use your Allergen ID card to privately inform the dining staff at any dining location of your dietary needs.
Our culinary team is trained to develop a delicious solution to meet your needs. Someone will reach back out to you to discuss your dining options and make accommodations if possible.
